Massive Messi mural in Argentine hometown gets third star

On Friday (July 10), a group of artists from Argentina unveiled a restored massive mural dedicated to Argentine national soccer team captain Lionel Messi in his hometown of Rosario, just 24 hours before a match where the local side seeks to advance to the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup. The artwork, titled “From Another Galaxy and From My City,” is painted on the side of a building in downtown Rosario, covers about 534 square meters, and its restoration required 300 liters of paint, said Marlene Zuriaga, one of the project’s two directors. In 2021, when the mural was originally unveiled, the national team led by Messi had not yet won the 2022 World Cup and had only two World Cup titles to its credit. However, on the eve of the match between Argentina and Switzerland in the World Cup quarterfinals Urteaga noted that his mural might need another update in the very near future. The new version of the mural also includes the phrase “Thank you!” at the top of the building.
