Leon Spinks enjoyed an outstanding amateur career, which culminated in him winning gold at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal in the light heavyweight division. When he turned pro in January 1977, it was clear Spinks was being fast tracked for major titles. He had won his first three fights inside the distance. His fourth fight, against Agosto, was a step up in class.

When Pedro Agosto turned pro in 1966, he won his first 19 fights - 17 by KO. Each time he stepped up in class, he lost, and by this stage, Agosto was a wily old pro. In his most recent fight, he had been stopped in four rounds by George Foreman.
