KLYTAIMNESTRA from Orphic Descent 3

This etude is a movement and dance exploration of the role of Klytaimnestra, based on the work written by Vasilios Arabos, was perfromed by the superb Jesse Driessens and developed by Vasilios Arabos and Atsushi Takenouchi during the third of the Imalis workshop series titled Orphic Descent.
The hybrid nature of the performance relies on a mixed musical core of contemporary music and traditional Greek demotic music. The sequence breaks into several parts.
The first part is an étude through movement of dramatic motifs developed in the form of a structured improvisation spanning a sequence of musical scores. The musical and dramaturgical motifs elicit a sequence of states and situations in the dancer that draw the figure of Klytaimnestra. The sequence of the first part is drawn mainly from a western contemporary and classical repertoire.
The second part of the étude beginning around the 9th minute or so, mixes into the Western musical score a parallel sequence of Greek Demotic and Eastern musical motifs. The audio mix alternates Greek and Western motifs from foreground to background structuring a new exploration of atmospheric and stylistic elements based on an encounter of microtonal and equal tempered tunings.
Finally, a third objective of the exploration was the establishment of a cinematographic language based on a set of filming principles appropriate to the subject and dancer capable not only of communicating the power of the live performance, but of contributing a further dimension of meaning and emotion.
Atushi Takenouchi was responsible for the Butoh dance training, Kostas Gioldasis for the Greek demotic dance training and Vasilios Arabos for the artistic direction, script/dramaturgical score and filming.
