This is for a person who has not ever strength trained (lifted weights) or who has not strength trained in more than five years. There are a number of reasons why you should lift weights but the one we’re going to focus on right now is increasing the muscle strength without injuring the joint. Remember to get a physicians approval before beginning any exercise program especially if you are over 40 or have any risk factors – you smoke, history of heart disease in immediate family, any chronic disease, etc. Once you are cleared by your doctor to exercise you need to start with these exercises that are called compound movements. That is exercises that involve at least two joints. They include:
