ivor .e hogg - Dragonsong

In all years of wandering
just once I heard a Dragon sing.
There is no music I have heard
which has been sung by beast or bird.

That could compare in any way
to music that I heard that day.
The dragon’s voice was deep and strong
and as he sang his sweet sad song.

I felt the tears roll down my face.
I could not move. Fast held in place
by the sad song the Dragon sang.

It was as if time had stood still
I knew I’d never have my fill
of singing so magnificent.
It left me with but one intent.

to hear the Dragon sing again.
I’ve travelled east I’ve travelled west
I’ve crossed the mountains and the plain.
But it has been a fruitless quest!

I would rise from my death bed
and crawl upon my knees in pain.
Like some half crippled quadruped
to hear the dragon sing again.
