Description

The conflict between Israelis and Palestinians is deeply rooted in historical, religious and political factors. It began in the late 19th century with the migration of Jewish immigrants to Palestine, then part of the Ottoman Empire, instigated by the Zionist movement. Tensions increased with the 1917 Balfo Declaration, in which the British government expressed support for a "national home for the Jewish people" in Palestine.

After World War I, the League of Nations gave Britain a mandate to rule Palestine. In the following decades, Jewish immigration increased, and conflicts arose between the Jewish and Arab communities. The United Nations proposed a partition plan in 1947, leading to the creation of Israel on May 14, 1948. This event marked the beginning of the First Arab-Israeli War.

Since then, the conflict has seen multiple wars, uprisings and negotiations. Major events include the Six Day War of 1967, which resulted in the occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The Camp David Accords of 1978 and the Oslo Accords of 1993 are attempts at peace, but a lasting solution remains elusive.

The core issues of the conflict revolve around borders, refugees, security and the status of Jerusalem. Israelis seek secure borders and recognition as a Jewish state. The Palestinians seek statehood, a proposal for refugees displaced in the 1948 and 1967 wars, and control of East Jerusalem as their capital.
