How to Make a Simple Clamp Rack

I finally got around to buying some new clamps and now I have a problem with storing them. I decided to try making a clamp rack with a dowel running along the wall so I can hang my clamps from that.

I started out by drilling a 1” hole half way through the vertical support on my lumber rack. The holes center is 1-3/16” from the side.

Bracket for holding the dowel is just simple short piece of 2x4, mine were scrap pieces about 5” long. First thing I did for the bracket was to drill two 3/8” diameter holes half way through the 2x4 so I can use my shorter screws for attaching the bracket to the wall. The broom handle I used as a dowel was just a bit under 1” in diameter so I made the through hole 1”, I flipped the piece around before drilling all the way through because I didn’t want to have any blow out on the back side. The 1” hole is centered 1-3/16” from the end and the side of the piece.

The rack was installed with two 6” long woodscrews. I used a level to make sure the rack was horizontal.

Remember to pay attention when making 3/8” holes so you don’t have to do them again like me.

After adding the support in the middle the dowel held just fine, the supports are spaced 24” center to center. Clamps seem to be staying put and even the quick release clamps can be stored in the rack.

Last thing I did was to add a small screw to have a place to hang my spring clamps.

All in all I think the clamp rack was a success! Hope you enjoyed this simple and cheap build!
