As there are different types of sealants, it is often that one sealant features a different usage or function through the other and so how each one works can also be distinct, but generally, sealants are utilized to do these three common functions:

- Fill the gap between two or more substrates.
- form a barrier through the actual properties of the sealant itself and by adhesion to the substrate.
- seals and maintains sealing properties for the desired lifetime, service conditions and environments.

Nearly all sealants have inert filler material and are usually formulated with an elastomer (elastic or rubber substance) and usually have paste-like capability so that they are able to adhere to substrates after filling gaps, able to form a protective barrier, and able to seal substrates.
