Hemochromatosis is a condition where you experience iron overload due to excessive absorption and accumulation of iron. There are two types of hemochromatosis. Primary hemochromatosis is caused by a defective gene in the body, and it is also called hereditary hemochromatosis. Secondary hemochromatosis is caused by environmental factors such as disease conditions or drugs that can cause accumulation of iron. The condition is not apparent during the childhood, and hemochromatosis symptoms usually appear when the levels of iron in the body are already at toxic levels. Some experience symptoms when there is already organ damage.
