Description

The turtles are moving again after winter,
Three crossed the road today, that I saw.
One was flipped over, smack in the middle,
Upside down and still, as if resigned.
I stopped to set the little fellow right,
To see him safely off, headed for the woods.
As I drove away I wondered, no, I imagined—
But I needn't imagine, it's a feeling I well know,
On my back, helpless; know nightly
As I lie in bed, staring into the darkness,
Taking comfort in neither wind nor stillness.
It would do me little good to be righted,
Set safely out of harm's way, night would
Come again, and there I'd be, on my back.
