Days like this, hot,
slipping off to the airport,
check the wx, walk-around, prefight,

“clear, ” crank, check oil pressure, unicom,
taxi, checklist, run-up,
announce, line-up, take-off...

three thousand feet and the air
is already cooler,
seven and I’m heaven.

Days like this, cumulus clouds to dodge,
breaking the rules,
slicing corners off the gray,

punching through,
dancing around the towers,
taking the thermal hits.

Days like this, hot, cumulus clouds to dodge,
and here I am, looking up.
