Fred Babbin - I Can Do What I Can Do

I don’t fix houses,
Or make blouses.
I’m not good at making music
Nor do I take pictures.

I’m just an old retired teacher,
Formerly the teacher feature
of my classroom.
That is what I used to do.

So I’ve taken a vocation
I have never thought of taking -
I write poems for my enjoyment
And I don’t need new employment.

I can write on anything
That comes to mind –
Not to make money,
But to be as funny,
Sad or melancholy,
As the case need be.

However, I can’t write forever,
this is very plain to see.

So I’ll write my poetry
until my head begins to be
so useless that I cannot write
my average ordinary poems
by light of day or lamp at night.

But my poetry must always be
In harmony with all of you
who listen to
the music of my words.
This is all that I can do -
I’ve tried to do it well for you.
