Description

The Flameback Woodpecker—most commonly known as the Black-rumped Flameback (Dinopium benghalense)—is a striking visual masterpiece of the South Asian avian world, instantly recognizable by its glowing golden-yellow back and the brilliant red crest sported by the males. Widely found thriving across urban gardens, groves, and woodlands, this energetic bird is built for life on the vertical, using its stiff tail feathers for balance and strong zygodactyl feet—with two toes facing forward and two facing backward—to grip bark securely as it hunts for ants and wood-boring beetle larvae. When documenting or watching them, keep an eye out for their characteristic undulating, dipping flight pattern and listen for their unmistakable, loud, laughing call that rings out through the trees, a sharp contrast to the rhythmic drumming of their powerful bills hard at work.
