ExoMars 2016 Mars Life Quest
Description
ExoMars 2016 is a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Roscosmos to search for evidence of life on Mars. The mission features two key elements: the Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO), which will remain in Martian orbit to study trace gases in the atmosphere, and the Schiaparelli lander, set to land on the Martian surface in October to test essential technologies for the upcoming ExoMars 2018 mission. Yesterday the spacecraft sent its first signal to Earth, confirming that its solar panels deployed and that it is on course for Mars, as shown in released footage. Part of the European Aurora Programme, ExoMars 2016 has an estimated cost of 850 million euros and its primary objective is to look for signs of past or present life on Mars. Stay tuned for updates on the Mars mission, including orbital science with the TGO, planned Schiaparelli landing, and the roadmap to the ExoMars 2018 mission.
