Elke Nigro - High Expectations

He yearns to know her personally,
He is eager to strip away the artificiality
with which she protects herself.

He wants her to trust him,
Trust being a component of love.

He yearns to be needed,
to understand and to be understood,
and to know her as well as he thinks he knows
himself.

He yearns to be appreciated, to be loved.

She senses his yearning by the way he looks at her,
smiles, takes her hand, and tells her about himself.

She peels away at the many layers of his psyche
to find him,
but only finds the mirror reflecting her own high
expectations.

She doesn't really see him.
