Dri35yf is a music super group that was formed in 2011. The group is mainly made up of four independent artists: Chillimane, Cruz, GearBoXX and King Barella. The group was formed as a result of the Phakamisi Kwaito Kasi to Kasi Tour programme, kicked off March 2010 and was launched at Shosholoza Restaurant and bar in Meadowlands Zone 7 and spread to strategic venues throughout Gauteng and then the country (South Africa). The tour involved a multitude of talented artist from the Kwaito fraternity.
The programme was about re-affirming the position of the local music genre (Kwaito and Vernacular rap) to the mainstream and creating a formal platform for artists and introducing / encouraging entrepreneurship. This is the foundation Dri35yf was established on.
The four artists that make Dri35yf the music group were brought together when what was intended to be a remix to Chillimane’s Ish Dade (single off Chillimane’s first offering) morphed into a classic kwaito song on its own, Sblome la! Sblome la went on to grab a number one spot on the kwaito charts on YFM and various national radio stations. It was the natural chemistry in studio and on stage between the Dri35yf members that brought them closer together.
Sblome la had gained so much popularity nationwide and became a theme song for Street Radio on Soweto TV. Chillimane was billed to perform at a major event in Newcastle Amcor Dam. The Newcastle Amcor Dam festival was a perfect venue to launch a new wave and showcase to a larger crowd. The “big guns” had to be pulled for that event.
The plan was to travel to Newcastle Amcor Dam rock the stage, get some footage and have fun. The night before the performance Dri35yf the group was born. Surreal
The process of coming up with a name was organic. A lot of names were thrown to the table but Dri35yf (pronounced Dree faif) was most suitable. All four artists in the group are forces on their own with a strong fan base and at least a chart topping hit record each. King Barella is an ex TS records, Hit House records signee from Meadowlands, Cruz has a vast industry experience from being a dancer for Doc Shebeleza in the 90s also from Soweto, Meadowlands, GearBoXX is a genius talent from KwaThema in Springs and Chillimane has a multifaceted lyrical flair and an extraordinary songwriter. All the talents, experience and capability combined make the group an all-star team.
The name Dri35yf refers to the group as Kwaito All-stars, taken from the township popular Converse sneaker brand.
Dri35yf is not a group per say, Dri35yf is a combination of efforts from individuals with an interest to entertain self and the masses. Dri35yf has extended members of the show that are not singing the actual music. Sizwe Mzolo “The Architect” and Deejay Rhee “The mouthpiece” are also worth mentioning in an establishment of Dri35yf.
