Cacophonie (video), 2003
Cacophonie consisted in the direction of an orchestra playing simultaneously the national anthems of France and Algeria, the two countries of which the artist has the (double) nationality. At each port of call, a third anthem (from the country where the Constanta had accosted) was added to the two others. For the artist, the simultaneous play of these anthems was a way to divert their symbolic aspect as well as their function of celebration and display of a national identity, to which individual identity is supposed to be attached.
