Dave Birss - Roman return

Stuffed with olives
And pickled with red wine
My Roman retreat
Is almost complete.

This last afternoon
I prepare my pilgrimage
To the famous fountain.

Legend maintains
That if you throw in some change
You’ll be coming back.
But I discover a lack of lire in my pocket.
I’ve spent my stash of cash.
So I pick out a card and swipe it with a splash.

So far I haven’t returned,
So I guess
That the fountain doesn’t take
American Express.
