Once, I used to dream of being free.
Of having the time to be me.
To bury my head in brilliant books
To try cooking food by celebrity cooks
To shave all my head and to grow a long beard
To write some new songs that are jerky and weird
To walk in the country just smelling the flowers
To stand in a rainstorm butt-naked for hours
To paint a huge canvas to hang in my hall
To learn keepie-uppies with my old football
To write my own novel
To make my own clothes
To follow a taxi wherever it goes
To grow my own salad
To sculpt my own head
To dance like a dervish
To make my own bread
To care for sick squirrels
To sleep for a week
To hop down the street like a one-legged freak
To eat my own toenails
To scratch like a dog
To pee in the garden instead of the bog
To dress like a lady
To climb a tall tree
To eat a whole cake of the finest French brie
To paint all my fingers
To learn to speak Thai
To try and drink all of my bathwater dry
To end all my sentences with ‘Daddio! ’
To give vegetarianism a go
To cry till I laugh and
To laugh till I’m sore
To dress up in cling-film and crawl on the floor
To put lots of mustard on all that I ate
To practice until I can levitate

One day I was sacked.
The world was mine.
And I hadn’t a clue what to do with my time.
