The king cobra is a poisonous snake that prefers to live in hot and humid environments and is most commonly found in Southern Asia, North Africa and the Philippines. They can grow up to 18 feet long and an adult king cobra can weigh around 20 pounds. They are brown or black in color and have a creamy-colored underbelly.
King cobras are the only snakes in the world that build a nest for their young. They can have between 20 to 40 eggs in a nest and the female guards the eggs faithfully, which can take 60 to 90 days to hatch.
The venom from a king cobra is not the strongest snake venom, but a single bite is enough to kill a large elephant. Most cobras will run and hide when they come in contact with people, but the king cobra will rear up and stand its ground when it feels threatened. Cobras don’t always inject venom when they bite; sometimes they will do a dry bite. Baby cobras are just as venomous as adults.
