Citalopram 40mg is used for treating depression. The antidepressant, which may take weeks to begin working, has been shown to significantly improve symptoms of depression.

Citalopram is part of a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Serotonin is a chemical used to send messages from one nerve cell to another.

As a message travels down a nerve, it causes the end of the cell to release serotonin. The serotonin enters between the gap of the two nerve cells. When enough serotonin passes to the next nerve cell, it activates the receptors and the message continues on its way. The first cell then quickly absorbs any serotonin that remains in the gap between cells. This is called "reuptake."

Citalopram 40mg is frequently used for several off-label uses, including the treatment of the following conditions:

Citalopram theoretically causes side effects by increasing the concentration of serotonin in different parts of the body. Other side effects, such as increased apathy and emotional flattening, may be caused by the decrease in dopamine.
