Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's condition is improving after his latest surgery in Cuba, says Vice President Nicolas Maduro in a televised address.

Tuesday's surgery in Havana was the leader's fourth operation since mid-2011 for cancer in his pelvic region.

In a strong showing of support, over 3,000 of the country's top military and government officials attended a mass in Caracas on Thursday.

And a vigil was held in Havana.

Chavez credits Cuban leader Fidel Castro with saving his life, saying it was he who noticed his ill health and urged him visit a doctor.

Since then, the 58-year old South American leader has sought treatment in Cuba.

In a state TV campaign Venezuelan officials are cautiously preparing people for the possibility that Chavez may not survive.

One spot opens with Chavez's voice thundering "I am no longer myself, I am the people," followed by Venezuelans of all ages telling the camera: "I am Chavez."

Chavez's health has deteriorated dramatically since he won re-election two months ago.
