Description

In the breaststroke, the swimmer's body remains still on their chest without rotation. Because it can be swum comfortably at slow speeds and the swimmer's head is out of the water for a significant portion of the stroke, it is the most popular recreational style.

Beginners learn either the breaststroke or the freestyle (front crawl) first in most swimming classes. But in a competitive setting, swimming the breaststroke quickly demands the same level of strength and endurance as other strokes. Because the arms and legs of the breaststroke resemble those of a frog swimming in the water, some people refer to it as the "frog" stroke. The stroke itself is believed to be the oldest and slowest of all competitive strokes.
