The architect Hayrettin built this mosque dur-ing the reign of Beyazit II, son and successor of Mehmet II the Conqueror, during 1497-1505. This mosque is the oldest among the Sultans’ mosques. Because of the doves that live at the mosque it is also known as the Dove Mosque. It’s said that the doves come from a pair sold by an old man to the Sultan.

In the square front courtyard 20 antique co-lumns support 24 domes. The ablution fountain in the centre dates back to the 17th century.
