Description

Badal Sircar (1925–2011) was a prominent Indian playwright and theater director, known for revolutionizing Indian theater with his concept of "Third Theatre." Born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Sircar initially worked as a town planner before dedicating himself to theater. He rejected commercial, proscenium-based theater ("First Theatre") and traditional folk theater ("Second Theatre") to create a more accessible, non-commercial, and flexible form of performance.

Sircar's plays, such as Evam Indrajit (1963), Pagla Ghoda (1967), and Basi Khabar (1972), often explored existential themes, urban alienation, and social issues. He emphasized minimalistic staging, audience interaction, and performances in non-traditional spaces like streets and parks, making theater more inclusive and affordable. His work significantly influenced contemporary Indian theater, blending global theatrical techniques with local narratives. Sircar also founded the Satabdi theatre group in Kolkata, which became a platform for experimental and socially relevant theater.
