ANKARA UNİVERSİTY

ANTİQUE RES.CON.LTD.
Situated 7 km south-east of Bor, this large mound, 18 m high, contains Early Chalcolithic and Late Neolithic deposits. Excavations by Ankara University, led by Uğur Silistreli, began in 1981 and were reopened under Aliye Öztan and Süleyman Özkan in 1995.
Levels I and II are Early Chalcolithic. In level I a kiln and copper working area were revealed and radiocarbon dates place it in the first quarter of the 5th millennium BC. In level II one two-roomed building has been identified as a "shrine" as long bones and skulls of cattle were arranged on a bench. Dead were buried under the floors. Obsidian tools are common and pottery has relief decoration of animal heads, female figures and schematic designs. Female figurines and loomweights were also found. The lower levels are Late Neolithic. In level III the settlement consisted of rectangular houses of two rooms grouped haphazardly. Walls were of mud brick on stone socles and roofs were of earth laid over mats supported by a timber frame. Inside the rooms were platforms, ovens and hearths.
