Description
The 100m sprint final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics was the fastest – and most thrilling - ever run. Canadian Ben Johnson led the field the whole way and recorded an astonishing time of 9.79 seconds, a new world record.
Within 24 hours, Johnson had tested positive for anabolic steroids and was immediately stripped of his gold medal. In the years that followed a wider picture was to unfold with six of the eight athletes in that race either testing positive, or being implicated, in performance-enhancing drug use.
The list includes Carl Lewis, athletics’ golden boy, official Olympic Sportsman of the Century, who failed three drugs tests for banned stimulants before the Seoul Olympics, yet was allowed to
compete by the US athletics authorities.
This is the story behind the dirtiest race in history.
