One of the earliest English-language ethnographies on Voodou, titled Voodoos and Obeahs, describes the great power Vodou had in the lives of Haitians and Jamaicans in the 1930's. In this work Williams described that mere fear of Vodou was enough to bring illness and that people frequently died in unexplainable ways from Vodou curses.
