You Can Control This Robot Arm With Your Mind
Description
by Sara Rao
Researchers from the University of Minnesota have created the first mind-controlled robotic arm that doesn’t require an invasive brain implant to operate. In a study, eight healthy adult subjects were able to manipulate objects with a robotic arm just by imagining moving objects with their own arms. They wore a cap fitted with electroencephalography (EEG) technology to read their electrical brain activity as they thought about moving the objects. Using advanced signal processing and machine learning, the subject’s brain activity was converted into commands that told the robotic arm how to move. With practice, users were able to pick up objects and move them to fixed locations with an 80 percent success rate. The post You Can Control This Robot Arm With Your Mind appeared first on Vocativ.
