On Sunday security forces opened fire on protesters killing at least five people and wounding more than a dozen..
Witnesses said security forces attacked the protesters as they tried to enter street , which lies between two areas one controlled by government forces and the other a powerful tribal leader.
Residents say security forces feared that protesters would block off the street, a major throughway for traffic.
Violence in Yemen has surged over the last two days, with security forces killing at least 12 people on Saturday while al Qaeda insurgents blew up a gas pipeline, halting gas exports.
SOUNDBITE: Dr. Tareq Noman, saying: (Arabic):
"Until now we have received 25 wounded, four of them have died after suffering head wounds. Their skulls were broken."
Yemenis are for U.N. Security Council members to agree to a resolution expected to urge President Ali Abdullah Saleh to hand over power under a Gulf Cooperation Council peace plan.
Saleh says he is ready to step down but wants to ensure that control of the country is transferred to safe hands.
