World marks 9/11 anniversary

It was a morning that changed the world --- claiming victims from more than 70 countries and defining the decade that followed.
In France, a 10-story replica of the twin towers. One tower features the names of the victims. The other showcases messages of love and support from the French people.
Despite the rain, hundreds turned out to be part of the commemoration, including many Americans living and visiting Paris.
SOUNDBITE: American citizen Alice Bell saying:
"I would compare it with the assassination of President Kennedy, I was in France at that time also, very moving, it shows the close friendship between the French and the Americans."
Prince Charles and David Cameron paid their respects at the U.S. embassy in London and there were prayers at St. Paul's Cathedral. The UK suffered more losses in the attack than any other foreign country, with 67 citizens among the nearly 3,000 people killed
In Italy, Pope Benedict delivered a message focusing on compassion.
SOUNDBITE: Pope Benedict saying (Italian):
"Today our thoughts turn to September 11, ten years ago. We remember the victims and their families, from those attacks that day and we invite heads of state and mankind to show goodwill and always reject violence as a solution to problems and resist the temptation to resort to hate but to instead work within society (to resolve issues) and be inspired by the principles of solidarity, justice and peace."
Outside the coliseum, there was a smaller silent demonstration of solidarity while South Africa marked the occasion with music.
On the streets of Tripoli, Libyans expressed their support for the families and were eager to make a distinction between Islam and Al Qaeda - a point some worry has been blurred since 9/11.
SOUNDBITE: Tripoli Resident Ibrahim Berbash saying (Arabic):
"We are against what has taken place on September 11. We are against all types of terrorism. We are against killing innocent civilians. Our religion, Islam, is far removed from committing such atrocities, and we deeply regret the killings that have taken place, whether it is in America, Europe or Islamic countries, or any other part of the world. Terrorism does not have any religion, or any mercy, and you have to fight
At NATO headquarters in Belgium, the flags of all 28 members were lowered as a bugler played "Taps." At the U.S. embassy in Beijing, hundreds held candles and observed the Chinese custom of floating lanterns in a pool ---- to honor the lives extinguished on September 11th.
