World leaders discuss Syria

Smoke rises on the horizon in Homs Syria where troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and anti-government rebels continue their conflict.

An estimated 10,000 people have been killed in the violence so far.

Even as fighting continues, world leaders meeting for the G20 summit in Mexico have been discussing a way forward.

U.S. President Barack Obama held talks with leaders from both China and Russia.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING:

"I wouldn't suggest that at this point the United States and the rest of the international community are aligned with Russia and China in their positions, but I do think they recognise the grave dangers of all-out civil war."

Both China and Russia have used their UN veto power to block tougher action against Assad.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of Assad's biggest supporters, reiterated his opinion about getting involved.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN SAYING:

"We believe that no one has the right to decide for other nations who to bring to power and who to oust from power."

Putin did say he believes a solution is necessary to stop the bloodshed.
