World Book Night 2013
Description
After an introduction from Southbank Centre Artistic Director, Jude Kelly, host Hardeep Singh Kohli welcomes to the stage an array of world-renowned writers, poets and performers including Sebastian Barry, Tracy Chevalier, Charles Dance, Sarah Dunant, Lucy Fleming, Mark Haddon, Victoria Hislop, Andrew Motion, Jojo Moyes, David Nicholls, Alice Oswald, Elif Shafak, Lemn Sissay, Rupert Thomson, Rose Tremain, and debut author of the moment Graeme Simsion with his first-ever UK reading from The Rosie Project.
The evening was directed by James Runcie, Southbank Centre’s Head of Literature and the Spoken Word, and takes the audience on a journey through time, place and genre. Short readings from 2013’s World Book Night books are deftly interwoven with poetic pieces chosen by the Josephine Hart Foundation, which was set up to celebrate Hart’s passion for poetry. Each World Book Night book features a poem chosen by the Josephine Hart Foundation.
Actor Charles Dance OBE reads from Josephine Hart’s Damage; Lucy Fleming reads from Ian Fleming’s How to Write a Thriller; novelist David Nicholls reads from Casino Royale; Rose Tremain reads from her award-winning novel The Road Home; Tracy Chevalier reads from her global bestseller Girl with a Pearl Earring; ‘Ireland’s finest writer’ Sebastian Barry reads from The Secret Scripture and Byron’s So we’ll go no more a roving; and much much more.
