Americans who work from home recover 60 million hours from commuting, according to research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Cutting their commute time allowed workers to spend more time at home, with friends and family, and taking care of their health. Younger workers were more like to spend time socializing and exercising, and older workers were more likely to spend time on domestic tasks. All groups gained an additional hour of sleep.
