Description

Christians and non-Christians alike are familiar with the Exodus story and the signs given to Moses to convince Pharoah to let the Israelites leave Egypt. Anyone who has watched Charlton Heston’s “Ten Commandments” movie, or read the passage from Exodus 4 is familiar with the three signs given to Moses by God: 1) Turning the staff into a serpent, 2) Turning the hand to leprosy, and 3) Turning the Nile River into blood.

In early versions of William Branham’s stage persona, before William Branham began insinuating that he was the return of the Biblical Elijah from the Old Testament, Branham used a “Moses” stage persona. In fact, this “Moses” persona was closely tied to his divine healing stage act. Branham claimed that an “angel” spoke to him in various conflicting locations and dates, and informed him that just like Moses, he, too, would be given signs.

The problem? William Branham apparently did not read the passage from Exodus 4 before creating this version of his stage persona. Instead of the three signs of Moses, William Branham said that the angel stated that Moses had only two signs. According to Branham, the angel said, “As Moses was given two signs to prove to the people that he had sent him to deliver them, so would you be given two signs.” After this mistake, Wiliam Branham could not very easily change it — the “two signs of Moses” became deeply integrated into Branham’s cult theology from as early as 1950 until the year of his death in 1965.
