This comes as a shot in the arm for Modi, who has been in the firing line of the US ever since the 2002 riots. The invite comes despite the fact that Washington has denied him a visa since 2005 because of deadly religious riots.The invitation is like a symbolic victory for Modi who is termed by many as a popular but divisive Hindu nationalist leader harbouring Prime ministerial ambitions.
