: "Every summer and fall, hundreds of millions of salmon will swim up to thousands of kilometers from the Pacific Ocean or large lakes to the exact mountain stream in which they were born. Once the salmon have returned to their natal stream, they will dig a nest, spawn, and pass away shortly after. This natural phenomenon enriches the surrounding ecosystem by providing an invaluable food source for countless animals such as bears, eagles, wolves, and the forest itself. These bright red spawning kokanee salmon are actually landlocked sockeye salmon. At some point, these salmon got cut off from the Pacific Ocean and now treat the major lake that this spawning channel flows into as their ocean."
