Wii 'proves' fastest selling console title

The Wii video games console has, according to its manufacturer, proven its credentials as the fastest selling console in the history of the industry.

Internal sales figures, released by Nintendo reveals the company has sold 30 million units in the US alone, reaching the milestone in just 45 months.

The nearest rival, Sony's Playstation 2, reached the same target in 60 months but currently has worldwide sales of close to 150 million units.

International sales of the Wii have passed 70 million, but the Japanese firm is unlikely to see record receipts due to competition and the global economic downturn.

Both Microsoft and Sony have unveiled new devices which they hope will capture a share of the motion gaming market.
