Imagine the late 1800s, when European powers were scrambling for land across Africa. Germany wanted its colony—today’s Namibia—to reach a major river for trade and prestige. Britain, managing nearby Botswana, agreed to a trade: Germany would get a narrow strip of land up to the Zambezi River, while Britain took control of Zanzibar. The result was the Caprivi Strip, a panhandle carved not by geography, but by diplomatic bargaining between empires.

But there was a twist no one bothered to check: just downstream lay the mighty Victoria Falls, making river transport nearly useless. Germany gained access to a river that couldn’t actually help them—yet the symbolic value of the land kept it in place.
