Why do exes turn into different people after a breakup

Breakups to some extent are devastating and really bad. We possibly go through a feeling that we have lost it all. The moment we enter into a relationship, we change a big part of our personality for that person. Maybe we lost some of our friends because we lessen our time to hangout with them. Or we made sacrifices both willingly and unwillingly for the sake of our relationship even though it drains us. And when the relationship is over, we feel like we have nothing left.
Therefore, to cope with the pain, we tend to look for other avenues of relief such as a change in usual patterns of behavior. Sometimes we do things or act in way that goes against our previous values to make ourselves believe that we have grown up and that we are not the same person anymore.
