President Donald Trump shocked many people, including some in his own administration, when he invited Rodrigo Duterte, the controversial president of the Philippines, to visit him in the White House. So who is Duterte? He was elected less than a year ago and since then, he has openly supported the killings of thousands in his ‘war on drugs’. The Philippines National Police say they’ve killed 2,250 “suspected drug personalities” between June 2016 and January 2017, with even more killed by “unknown gunmen”. These extrajudicial killings have alarmed human rights groups, but Duterte continues to be an extremely popular figure in his country, remaining unapologetic about his methods.
