Who is not a good candidate for liposuction

Myths prevail and plastic surgery is not exempt from it. There is this common misconception surrounding Liposuction, in particular. For most people, liposuction is a procedure to remove excessive fat and when all is said and done, it is a weight loss alternative. Do note that just like any procedure in cosmetic surgery, there are several factors that are taken into consideration before this surgical technique is recommended to the patient. Simply put, you may not be a good candidate for liposuction if you have any of the following conditions:

Number 1: Cellulite:

Cellulite is every woman’s bane and cause for concern. There is this perception that cellulite can be improved with liposuction. Perish the thought! Bottom line, liposuction is not a treatment for cellulite. Depending on your skin tone and the level of cellulite, liposuction may slightly improve it, but as a rule of thumb, cellulite is not going to be completely resolved with liposuction.

Number 2: If you are overweight or obese.

You need to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure. Liposuction will remove what we call the subcutaneous fat, which is the superficial fat of the body. The weight will change slightly, in proportion to the pockets of fat that were removed through liposuction but the deep, excessive fat common among obese people won’t be improved with this procedure.

Number 3: If you have a very poor skin tone.

When we talk about cosmetic surgery, the skin tone really determines the outcome of a procedure. Skin elasticity is very important and best results can be expected from patients who have this. If you have lost a lot of weight, if you have a lot of excess skin or if you have been pregnant with stretch marks and your skin elasticity is poor, liposuction is not going to be the best procedure for you. Finally, you will not be a good candidate for liposuction if you have a severe illness or a medical condition like hypertension or diabetes that is, for the moment, uncontrolled, If any of these conditions are under control, then you will be able to have liposuction for as long as you have medical clearance from your doctor. Different patients have different anatomies, different skin tone, and different needs. A consultation with your plastic surgeon would be necessary to determine if liposuction would be the ideal procedure for you.
