WHISKEY IN THE JAR

"Whiskey in the Jar" is a timeless Irish folk song capturing rebellion, love, and betrayal. Its roots trace back to the 17th century, often linked to Irish highwayman tales. Popularized by The Dubliners in the 1960s and the Highwaymen in the U.S., the song has been reimagined by various artists.
In my version, the chorus reflects modern themes: "Dreamt of gold and silver, but the Devil came to stay. There’s Whiskey in the jar, my friend, and it took life away." This chorus maintains the original spirit, highlighting the eternal struggle between temptation and consequence.
As the protagonist encounters Captain Farrell, he steals his fortune and brings it home to Jenny, only to face treachery: "She sighed and swore she loved me, and never would deceive me. But the devil took that woman, for you know she tricked me easy."
The highwayman, drunk and weary, invites disaster: "Being drunk and weary, went into my chamber, dreamt of gold and fortune there and surely was a wonder. But Jenny had my pistol, and then she hid my dagger, sent for Captain Farrell, I was ready for the slaughter."
Captured without a weapon: "T’was early in the morning, before rising to travel, up comes a band of footmen and likewise, Captain Farrell. First reached for my pistol, and then felt for my dagger, with no weapon at the desperate side, a prisoner was taken."
In the final stanza, the protagonist's situation contrasts with others' pleasures: "Now some men come to fishin’, and some men come to fowlin’. And some men like to hear the sound of cannon balls a roarin'. But stuck in shackles, with stories to tell, dreaming of the mountains from this dreary prison shelter."
Ending with a nod to the original chorus: "There’s Whiskey in the jar, there’s Whiskey in the jar. Dreamt of gold & silver but it didn’t get far."
