What Is Energy Star

ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program with oversight from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Two thirds of greenhouse gas emissions in the US come from energy used in buildings such as:

Homes
Industrial Buildings
And Plants

ENERGY STAR has been dedicated to, and successful in reducing these emissions.

For a new home to be certified, it must be tested by a third party organization. The tests that must be passed include:

Thermal Enclosure Inspections: Are leaks and drafts reduced?
HVAC Quality Installation: Are heating, ventilating, and cooling systems working optimally?
& Water Management Inspections: Is the home protected from water and mold related problems?

In addition, the home will be rated on a HERS or "Home Energy Rating System" and must fall into an acceptable rating relative to it's size.

Only once the inspections are complete, and all standards are met, can a home earn the ENERGY STAR label.
