Levomycetin is a white crystalline substance with a very bitter taste. Its other names are chloramphenicol and chloromycetin.
According to the IUPAC nomenclature, its full name is D-(-)-threo-1-(p-nitrophenyl-2-dichloro-acetylamino-1,3-propanediol.
