What If I'm Being Harassed by a Client or Customer

If you are being harassed by a client or customer you have recourse.
Federal law protects workers from harassment in the workplace under Title VII, which is most often applied when employees are harassed by co-workers, managers or similar individuals employed at the same workplace.
However, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 also protects workers from harassment when it is originated by a client or customer as well.

Employers have a duty to create and foster a workplace environment that is free from harassment, and this duty also applies to customers and non-employees who engage in harassment.
If an employer knew, or should have known, that a customer or client engaged in harassment but failed to take corrective action, then legal action may be warranted.
