Description

The humpback whales spend Summer in Antartica feeding on krill (tiny shrimp). They also mate in Antarctica. In the winter months, they then travel North to warmer waters and so travel North along the East Coast off Australia.

This is where we spotted them, heading North, just off Sydney. On a small boat with my son and his three mates. We trialled a device to speak to the whales..it seemed to bring them to the boat like rats to the pied piper! They swam under the boat and blew bubbles! They even breached twice right near the boat. We were pretty scared!

When the whales reach the warm waters in Queensland, they calf. After a short time, they then head back South, and the cycle continues.

It surprising how fast they swim. A small boat would have difficulty keeping up. It is also surprising how long they can spend under water.
About 14,000 travel past Sydney every Winter.
