Way Down Yonder In New Orleans - Spiegle Wilcox

Spiegle Wilcox, the legendary trombonist played in 1926 and 27 in the Jean Goldkette Orchestra, a band which featured some of the best white musicians of the twenties. Many star musicians had started in this band, Hoagy Carmichael, Frankie Trumbauer, Bill Rank, Joe Venuti, Eddie Lang and of course the most famous of them all was Bix Beiderbecke. Spiegle retired from being a professional musician, but kept on playing locally and later in life went on annual trips thoughout Europe with violinist Joe Venuti. In 1987 Spiegle landed in Toronto and walked in a club where our band was playing. He sat in and Spiegle became a friend. My wife and I have visited him at his house near Syracuse several times and in 1988 we recorded and a cassette record was issued. Jack Vincken, banjoist of our Climax Jazz Band, told me that they were thinking of issuing a CD of that event.
