The Crisis Aboard US Aircraft Carrier Gerald R. Ford
14 Views • Apr 25, 2026
Description
The situation has escalated significantly since March 12, 2026. Here is the current ‘boots on the deck’ status for the USS Gerald R. Ford:
The Laundry Fire and Damage
What was initially reported as a minor incident has turned out to be much more severe. A fire broke out in the ship’s main laundry area and, while the flames were contained in a few hours, the damage control efforts lasted over 30 hours. #iranisraelwar #usnavy
Crew Impact: More than 600 sailors lost their sleeping quarters and have been bunking on floors and tables.
Casualties: Over 200 sailors were treated for smoke inhalation, and at least one was medically evacuated.
Logistics: The Navy is reportedly flying in 1,000 mattresses and thousands of new uniforms because the ship’s laundry capability was wiped out.
The Sabotage Investigation
Perhaps the most dramatic ‘crisis’ element is that the Navy has launched a formal investigation into potential arson. There are reports that investigators are looking into whether the fire was intentionally set by crew members as a ‘desperation move’ to force the ship into port and end their 11-month deployment.
Technical & Deployment Strain
Record-Breaking Deployment: The Ford is on track to hit 11 months at sea, which would break the post-Vietnam record for the longest carrier deployment (currently held by the USS Abraham Lincoln at 294 days).
Plumbing Issues: The high-tech VCHT sewage system continues to be a nightmare, with internal emails showing over 200 breakdowns in just a four-day period earlier this year.
Current Status: The carrier is currently limping toward Souda Bay in Crete for emergency repairs, leaving the USS Abraham Lincoln as the only carrier left on station for ‘Operation Epic Fury’ against Iran.
