Waist trainers: Miracle cure or snake oil?

The massive boom in the popularity of waist trainers (thanks to several celebrities and social media!) has resulted in me now receiving more questions than ever about waist training. The wide array of questions I receive is astounding, however the main ones I receive are related to whether or not they work/have benefits, and also as to their safety. In today’s piece we shall look at these to give you a small insight into waist training and whether it may be an avenue you’d like to go down.

You may be wondering if I have any authority to discuss waist trainers and training, and I can say that I have used them myself and several of my clients have also done so. My opinions are both based on this anecdotal evidence and a small amount of scientific evident I have read.

Are they safe? If used correctly then yes, they can be very safe indeed. For a waist trainer to be 'safe' it must fit properly, i.e. not be too tight, and the amount of time in it must be gradually increased over time. If you feel any discomfort then it must be removed immediately. Always consult a healthcare professional if you experience any pain from using it (that doesn't go away). Remember, corsets and the like have been used for many hundreds of years, so if they were dangerous they'd be banned! Just remember to be sensible when using them.

Do they work? Yes and no. Yes, they will slim your waist instantly and can have long term and permanent effects, but if you're hoping that wearing one will magically make you drop 20lbs then you're going to be in for a shock. A waist trainer in conjunction with diet and exercise will produce the best results without a shadow of a doubt.
